A few years ago when struggling to conceive, I decided to have a real clean up of my lifestyle. I starting eating better, exercising more and reducing my toxic load. Almost 4 years later and my house is now preeetty clean in terms of toxic products that I allow to come into it. I know its overwhelming to start off with, so here’s some of my cheapest and easiest ways to reduce toxins in your home.
Ditch Perfume
Perfume and artificial fragrance is a toxic mix of so many nasty chemicals. These chemicals can add to the toxic load on your body, overwhelming your liver, causing it to recycle hormones, and throw them out of proper balance. This is a super cheap way of reducing your toxic load because guys, you don’t even need perfume. If you still want to smell pretty you could opt for something natural like essential oils (that you can obviously buy from me), but you can forgo the perfume and no-one will notice. My top doTERRA picks for perfume alternatives are Passion, Whisper and Citrus Bliss.
Make a Multipurpose Spray
Truth bomb: you don’t need 8 different cleaning sprays. One will do you just fine! A 20-year longitudinal study conducted by scientists at the University of Bergen in Norway has found that using cleaning products can be as harmful as smoking 20 cigarettes a day. Yikes!! That’s not good for your lungs friends. I make my multipurpose spray with On Guard Cleaner Concentrate and water but you can also do combos of white vinegar, water and essential oils. It’s super easy, safe, cost effective. I use mine to clean surfaces in the kitchen, bathroom, and even the windows too! Throw Out Air Fresheners
Plug ins, cheap reed diffusers, cheap candles, and toilet sprays? BYE. We don’t need you anymore. Alternatives? Opening your windows everyday (hi fresh air!), using a diffuser, and deodorising your carpets by sprinkling them with baking soda and vacuuming. My favourite oils for freshening the air? Lemon, Wild Orange, Citrus Bliss, Tangerine and Siberian Fir.
Buy a Glass Drink Bottle
At the moment I’m trying to rid my whole kitchen of plastic, particularly plastic that gets heated. Its a big job! Plastic can leach toxins out into our food so we want to avoid if we have a better choice. Let’s start with ONE thing: a drink bottle. A love glass but stainless steel is also a great option! Here’s a few that are great!
Glass Drink bottle from Kmart – $8.00
Sol Glass Drink Bottle – $39.00
Monti Stainless Steel Bottle – $37.90
Buy a Menstrual Cup or Period Undies
If you are a women (my blog + Instagram stats tell me you probably are) you most likely have a period that you need to deal with in some way each month. There are organic versions of tampons and pads but why not go reusable? It saves you so much money, reduces waste and is totes non tox! My top pick is the Hello Cup! I barely get my period due to pregnancy and breastfeeding the past few years but anytime I have had my period I use my Hello Cup and really rate it! You can use the code HELLOBRITTNEY for 10% off too!
How are those tips? Incorporated any already? I’d love to know!! What are you going to start with to reduce toxins in your home?
