Oh hi there! Welcome to 2016. You may have (hopefully have) noticed that Ever So Britty has had a makeover! I’m still trying to get everything up and running properly so I apologise in advance if things are looking wack. Since everyone is all in the spirit of goal setting with it being the new year, I thought I would share some of my favourite tips for staying on top of your goals. As some of you are aware, I’m a trained primary school teacher, which means I basically have a degree in goal setting! Ha! In this post I’ve also included a free printable goal sheet if you’re joining 16 for 2016 (Read this if you haven’t already!). See others who have decided to do 16 for 2016 here.
THINK OF THE BIG PICTURE.
When I’m creating goals, I like to look at the big picture. Thinking only a few months ahead doesn’t really work for me so I prefer to think of where I would like to be in a year or two. This gives me a solid direction of where I’m heading.
RECORD YOUR GOALS.
Ever heard someone blurt out on NYE that their resolution is to quit something and the next day you see them doing/eating/saying that particular thing? It’s so important to record your goals somewhere that you will see them regularly! You can do this in a variety of ways, from writing them in your diary, putting them on your wall or even changing your passwords to some of your goals!
BREAK THEM DOWN.
Your goal may be to run a marathon, but that’s not going to happen overnight right? Starting with 2 mile runs might be a better idea to begin with. Break your goals down into smaller, more manageable steps that will help you work towards your big goal. You will feel like you are achieving more at every little milestone, keeping you motivated and on track!
GIVE THEM A TIMEFRAME.
One of the reasons that New Years Resolutions seldom work is because a year is a long time. People put off doing what they want to, deciding to start later. And later. And LATER. Eventually a year is up and they haven’t even started! Give a timeframe of when you want to achieve your goals and when you plan to meet the steps along the way.
REFLECT ON THEM REGULARLY.
Sometimes you ace your goals super fast (go you!) and other times you might realise that your goals aren’t actually that relevant anymore. This is totally fine! When I was on practicum as a student teacher I would have to write daily reflections about the happenings of the day and how I was working towards my goals. This seemed like such a drag at the time but was actually pretty important on my journey towards becoming a qualified teacher. Setting ten minutes aside every week or two to reflect on your goals is a good idea as it gives you a chance to evaluate your progress, and next steps.
Hopefully these tips are helpful for you. They definitely were for me! If you would like to download the 16 for 2016 goal planner, simply sign up to my newsletter below to get instant access to the freebie library!
