I know its all about the thought behind the present, but receiving a gift that REALLY isn’t up your alley makes it seem like not a lot of thought has gone into right? Today I thought I would share a few tricks I use when buying great gifts. Gift giving is one of my top love languages. I LOVE to give and receive gifts. Now I’m talking about real gifts, gifts that have had a lot of thought put into them according to likes and dislikes. I know this is not the easiest thing to do and I’m by no means an expert, but over the past few years I have developed a few tricks that make it easier to give better gifts.
1. Take note of what the person likes.
Buying great gifts is easy if you know what the person likes. If ever you hear someone talk about something that they love, write it down! It may be a particular item, colour or store. I like to keep a record (often mentally) of things people have said so I have a few ideas when it comes to their birthday or Christmas. People are constantly talking about things that they love and it’s so easy to get a few ideas together to keep for when you need them.
2. Think about what the person already wears, owns and does.
If you’ve never seen your sister-in-law wear a necklace, chances are she won’t wear the necklace you buy her. If she’s always wearing floral scarves, than maybe thats a better idea. Think about their home and what they have. Pick something that you think would easily fit in with what they have already. Maybe this person has a certain hobby that they’re really into. Think about ways you could align our gift with the hobby.
3. Get something practical.
You can’t go wrong with practicality. I’m thinking wooden spoons wrapped up in a cute tea towel with some homemade cookies! Or maybe a nail polish and hand cream? Maybe even a little basket of cleaning supplies and snacks as a house warming present? There are so many great ideas on Pinterest for little gifts that are both practical and pretty. I LOOOOVE this New Mum Survival Kit that I made up for my sister in law.
4. Check out their Pinterest boards.
This is one of my FAVOURITE tricks. This is awesome for quickly seeing what the person likes. Check out their most recent pins as that will give you a good indication on what they love right now.
5. Get a voucher.
You may think this is flaking out on a present but it really isn’t, especially if its to their favourite shop or cafe! Dress the voucher up with something appropriate too. For example, get a cute mug and a Starbucks voucher!
P.S. Don’t forget the wrapping!
A gift is immediately made better with great wrapping. And it doesn’t have to be hard either. Check out this post I did on some easy ways to wrap things or this Pinterest board.

Great tips, Brittney. I’ve never been great at buying gifts, and my trouble is that a lot of the family I buy Christmas presents for are in the UK, so I don’t get to see what they like. I have got little clues from facebook before, though!

Thanks Karen! I’ve never had to send gifts overseas, or at all really but it must be so tricky sometimes!

I have never thought to check out their Pinterest boards. What a great idea. I am a practical gift giver. I like to get things people NEED or something different, yet practical, and if I can’t do that, then it’s a voucher to the movies, favourite store or a pedicure, if it’s one of my gal-pals – then I can join them. Win-Win right?

Haha Pinterest boards are my lifesaver!
