I can’t believe that this is the first sewing post I’ve ever done here on the blog. I studied fashion design for a year when I first left school so used to be a very competent sewer. Lately I’ve made quite a few of versions of this DIY Plush Bunny for pregnant friends and new baby gifts. I love making them and giving them, exploring with different colours and fabric combinations. You will need to download this pattern here to create this toy.
Firstly you’ll need to print out the pattern and cut it out. I usually draw around the pattern with pencil and then cut it out. You will need 2 of the body, 4 ears and 4 arms. For 2 of the ears use contrasting fabric. Put together the ears together (right sides facing) and sew a 1cm seam.Trim around the seam allowances and turn it the right way around.
Do the same with the arms and stuff them so they’re nice and full. Turn the edges of the ears to the centre and pin. Pin the ears to the head and sew at about 0.5cm. This will secure them and make it easier to sew the whole bunny later. Sew the arms onto one side of the body, just short of 1cm.
Put both sides of the rabbit together, leaving one arm out. Sew from the bottom of one arm hole to the other, and the top of one arm hole to the other. You want to have openings at both arms. Pull the bunny through the opening that already has the arm out.
Draw a face onto the bunny with water soluble marker and stitch with embroidery thread. Pin the arm openings together, ensuring the seam lines match up on each side. Machine sew 0.6cm (approx) from the seam. This line of stitching is just to secure the seam so you can hand sew it with ease. Hand sew the seam with small stitches, closely to the seam. Use an unpick to remove the previous line of stitching.
I LOVE this DIY plush bunny. Isn’t it the cutest?
