You may or may not have heard of it, but Periscope has been around for a while now (a year actually!) and it quite popular in some circles. Periscope is a broadcasting app where people are able to give live videos of what they are up to right at that moment. You get notifications anytime someone you follow is live, so you can quickly join in on the action. Some people, like bloggers, choose to talk about a particular subject, such as food photography or Facebook strategy. Other people might be at an event and take you right into the action. My favourite scopes are ones where women share what’s on their heart and tell stories.
Periscope is my new favourite social media platform because of this community aspect. It is really supportive and people are always backing each other up. I follow some ladies who share some really personal stories which are both encouraging and uplifting. Since I work mainly at home and we live in the country, I don’t have a tonne of social interaction. Following, watching and chatting with people on Periscope can be like having your bestie over for a cup of tea. While doing my dishes and folding the laundry, I’ve been both laughing and crying along with people sharing their stories.
The standard setting for ‘scopes’ is for all people watching to be able to comment, but if you choose, you are able to close the comments to only people that follow you and that you follow back (mutual followers). There are three options for your broadcasts: broadcast to everyone, broadcast to your mutual followers, or broadcast to selected people. If you miss someone scoping live, you are able to watch the replay for 24 hours, but cannot comment. Now a word of warning warning… be wary of the creepers. They find women to follow and will join their scopes to comment inappropriate things. And their profile photos? Nasty. Fortunately, with two taps of the screen you are able to quickly block these people from seeing any of your activity from then on. If you’re watching someone else’s scope and see gross comments, you can also easily block them to avoid them turning up to your scopes! I regularly have a quick look through my followers and block any people that look dodgy. Unfortunately, Periscope doesn’t have the best privacy settings so this side of it can be a big deterrent!
What I’ve Been Learning
Watching other people on Periscope has been teaching me some pretty big things lately. Such as…
Sharing Your Testimony is Powerful
I should know this one by now, but it always surprises me how one person’s testimony can inspire and encourage so many others. Your story can be incredibly powerful and help others in similar situations. Whether your life is great at the moment, or if it really sucks, there’s someone out there interested in what you’re going through. There is strength in numbers and if we do things together its much easier right?
Religious Denominations Don’t Actually Matter
Ok, seriously guys. I used to get all hung up on which type of church people went to, assuming that some different denominations weren’t as legitimate as my own. I know, I’m sorry, I was stupid. Like Jesus is Jesus right? I follow some amazing girls that are Catholic through to LDS (Mormon) and their faith and love for God RADIATES out of them. I’ve came to realise that different doesn’t necessarily mean bad, so why not focus on the similarities?! Christians get so hung up on stupid little things when what Christianity really boils down to is loving God and loving people. If you’re doing those two things than I honestly don’t even care about the finer details.
Who to Follow
I try to keep my following limited so that I don’t spend too much time on Periscope. Below I’ve included some of my favourites who I regularly watch and included some information from their bio!
Christian Mummas
My favourite type of people to follow! These ladies are the best! And if you’re not Christian, check them out anyway. They share on a huge range of things such as essential oils, blogging, make up tutorials, and the lot.
@athomewithnatalie – Blogger at At Home With Natalie. Loves motherhood, throwing parties and being creative.
@MrsAniTaylor – This lady is awesome. She shares her heart and is so real. Love her.
@fairchildkat – Kat Fairchild is crazy talented and hilarious. She cracks me up! Her scopes include make up and flower arranging tutorials which are ALWAYS fun.
@Valleygaldesigns – Cami makes the most adorable bows which she sells in her Etsy shop. You should watch her scopes just to see her great facial expressions.
@erinwilkins_ – Erin is probably my favourite scoper right now. Not only is she insanely beautiful on the outside, but her heart too is beautiful. She hooks me into every scope of hers, no matter the subject. Guys, I’ve even intently watched her potty training ones.
@jennaskitchen – Jenna shares tips on wellness, motherhood and business. She also is made me put eye lash extensions on my wish list because her’s are AMAZE.

@MariahCoz – If you’re a blogger and you don’t know Mariah, shame on you! She heads up Femtrepreneur and seriously knows her stuff.
If you aren’t part of Periscope, go give it a try! Find a few of the people I’ve mentioned because you’re sure to love them. Like any social media platform, it can waste time, but what I love about it is that you can watch along whilst doing what you do!
Happy Easter!
