If you have ever been on Pinterest, you would have probably came across a range of projects that use nail polish to create a marbled effect. Usually for a cute mani or mug. I’ve tried both of these and failed miserably! Being the true trooper that I am, I decided to put my own spin on this technique and create these cute marble dipped bud vases.
What you will need:
- bud vase
- masking tape
- chalk paint
- a range of nail polishes
- disposable container
- skewers
First you will need to mask off the around the bottom of the vases. I masked off the bottom 3cm of mine.
Paint the bottom section with chalk paint. I use Chalk Furniture Finish Heirloom Paint that you can find here. Apply two coats and wait till its fully dry.
Fill your container with hot water. Drop blobs of nail polish from the brush into the water. If you drop it from too far up, it will sink to the surface rather than sitting on the top of the water.
After about a minute, the nail polish will form a skin on top of the water. This is when you want to dunk your vase in slowly, using a skewer to collect all unused nail polish.
You don’t want the nail polish to be super thick on the vase (like the photo) or it won’t dry. After this first attempt, I tried again with just two colours and got a much better result. Pull the masking tape off carefully while the nail polish is still wet. Use nail polish remover to fix up any mistakes.
I love how mine turned out and am so proud that I have finally conquered the marbled nail polish effect! Try it yourself and let me know how it goes!

P.S. If you love the framed print you can get it from Society 6 here.

This is so gorgeous! I love the colors you’ve used, they look so cool!
But, I must say, although I am extremely impressed with the marble dipped bud vase, I am really impressed with your photos and your staging. I wish I had 1/2 the talent you do! I am a new fan, but a huge fan! I will be keeping my eye on you and I’m looking forward to getting to know you better!!!
PS, my sending this as a Pin to my 15 year old daughter, she has tons of nail polish and I bet she’d love to make these! Thanks.
